Fungus killing more bats than previously thought

January 18, 2012|By Louis Sahagun, Los Angeles Times

Federal researchers say an infectious and lethal cold-loving fungus sweeping through parts of North America and Canada has killed millions more bats over the last five years than previously estimated.

The rapidly spreading fungus responsible for white-nose syndrome is now believed to have killed 5.7 million to 6.7 million bats, a count several times higher than earlier estimates, across 16 states as far west as Oklahoma.

The fungus, which scientists know as Geomyces destructans, seems to prefer the 25 species of hibernating bats. But each of the 45 species of bats in the United States and Canada may be susceptible, wildlife biologists say.

Estimating the number of bat deaths posed a challenge for biologists because establishing numbers of once common species had not been a primary focus of seasonal population counts. But with mortality rates reaching up to 100% at some sites, a team of 140 researchers in the United States and Canada recently coordinated their survey strategies to come up with a consistent estimate, said Jeremy Coleman, national white-nose syndrome coordinator for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service.

The higher number shows the gravity of the problem, Coleman said in an interview. "We still don't know what the cascading effects will be in the environment to our ecosystems.

"This much is certain: Bats have such low reproductive rates that it will likely take multiple human generations to get bat populations back up to the numbers they were just five years ago," Coleman said.

The disease has killed mostly little brown bats ? one of the most common mammals in North America ? which have lost an estimated 20% of their population in the northeastern United States.

"We are just beginning our winter surveys for this year and we expect to find that the disease has spread to additional states," said Ann Froschaur, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

White-nose syndrome can be transmitted between animals through direct contact. It gets its name from the powdery, white substance that appears around muzzles, ears and wings of affected bats.

Bats with white-nose syndrome exhibit unusual behavior during cold winter months, including flying outside during the day and clustering near the entrances of caves and mines where they hibernate. Bats have been found sick and dying in unprecedented numbers near these hibernacula during a portion of the year when there are no insects to eat.

Researchers are racing to find methods of managing the pathogen, including possible vaccination campaigns, and to manipulate the environment that brings it together with bats ? the chilly galleries of caves.

New weapon aimed at Occupy: lynching charge

http://youtu.be/8UAj4Ohsce4

Screen grab from youtube video showing the arrest of Occupy LA activist Sergio Ballesteros on Thursday, Jan. 12. Ballesteros, 30, was released on $50,000 bail early Tuesday. He is charged with "lynching"--a felony charge originally drafted to deal with vigilante mobs.

By Kari Huus, msnbc.com

Sergio Ballesteros, 30, has been involved in Occupy LA since the movement had its California launch in October. But this week, his activism took an abrupt turn when?he was arrested on a felony charge ? lynching.

Under the California penal code, lynching is ?taking by means of a riot of any person from the lawful custody of any peace officer," where "riot" is defined as two or more people threatening violence or disturbing the peace. The original purpose of the legal code section 405a was to protect defendants in police custody from vigilante mobs ? especially black defendants from racist groups.

Whether its use in this case will be upheld by California?s courts is uncertain. But the felony charge ? which carries a potential?four-year prison sentence ? is the kind of accusation that can change the landscape for would-be demonstrators.

Occupy protesters bring their discontent to Congress

"Felonies really heighten the stakes for the protesters," said Baher Azmy, legal director at Center for Constitutional Rights in New York. "I think in situations where there are mass demonstrations and a confrontation between protesters and police, one always has to be on the lookout for exaggerated interpretations of legal rules that attempt to punish or squelch the protesters."

Ballesteros, a teacher-turned-social-activist,?was one of two people arrested during an "art walk" in downtown Los Angeles on Thursday. He and other Occupy LA activists ? maybe 200, he said ? had joined the procession to bring their message about social injustice to the thousands of gallery-goers.

One protester who was playing a drum was arrested after stepping off the curb into the street.?Ballesteros said that in doing so, the drummer was joining hundreds of other people who could not fit on the crowded sidewalk.

Occupy protesters underwhelmed by senator's staff

Ballesteros said he was across the street when he saw the arrest ? which he said looked excessively rough -- and it was ?startling.? Under legal advice, Ballesteros is not providing additional detail, but apparently he objected ? in some fashion ? to the arrest. A video of the crowded scene posted on YouTube?shows Ballesteros on the ground, being handcuffed.

He was booked into jail on a felony charge, the Los Angeles Police department confirmed, and released on $50,000 bail early Tuesday morning.

'I can't go out and express myself'
Ballesteros is not the first protester to face this 1933 California law.

Occupy Oakland activist Tiffany Tran, 23, was arrested?Dec. 30 and charged with "lynching." At an arraignment four days later,? prosecutors opted not to file the charges,?the San Francisco Bay Guardian reported. They could change their minds until the one-year statute of limitations expires.

"Now I feel I can?t go out and express myself as I should be able to," Tran told the paper.

Houston DA turns up the heat on Occupy activists?

In the handful of protest cases in which lynching has been used as a charge?in the past, it later has been dropped. However, in one case, a court concluded that ?lynching? could include ?a person who takes part in a riot leading to his escape from custody."

Most states have laws against lynching ? largely drafted to prevent white supremacists and other vigilante groups from using violence against African Americans?and?white people who supported them. Hundreds of lynchings of this sort took place in the late 1800s through the mid-1900s.

Trying to silence him?
Ballesteros, who?spoke to msnbc.com on Monday, said that he does not believe he will be convicted of lynching.

?They don?t have much,? he said of the case against him.

He also faces a misdemeanor charge for his arrest?Nov. 30, when he was among more than 200 people who defied eviction from an encampment on the grounds of Los Angeles' City Hall. There was an arraignment for protesters arrested that day, but they were told no charges yet had been filed.

?They have a year to do so,? said Ballesteros. "Now they certainly will. It?s obvious. It?s all political.?

Ballesteros took part in a live video forum between Occupy movement activists and Tea Party activists just a day before his arrest. Click here to hear the discussion.

Euro zone inflation dips, opens door to ECB cut (Reuters)

BRUSSELS (Reuters) ? Consumer prices in the euro zone fell more than previously expected in December, the start of a retreat from a November peak that should give the European Central Bank more room to cut interest rates as the economy heads for recession.

Inflation in the 17 countries sharing the euro was 2.7 percent in December on an annual basis, revised down from an earlier estimate of 2.8 percent for the month, the European Union's statistics office Eurostat said.

"The pressure is abating although the risks from energy are still there," said Fabio Fois, an economist at Barclay's Capital. "We think the ECB could bring rates as low as 0.5 percent in March," he said.

The bank made two 25 basis points cuts after Mario Draghi took over as president in November before holding fire this month.

Many economists expect it to take rates below 1 percent for the first time ever in the coming months but comments by Governing Council member Ewald Nowotny published on Tuesday hinted that the bank was in no hurry to move again.

"We are all agreed that now the point is to allow these measures to take full effect. Only then will we take further decisions," he told the Wall Street Journal's German website.

"For the ECB 'We never precommit' always applies, but there are no plans whatsoever at the moment."

Reuters' latest polling of some 66 economists before the ECB met earlier this month suggested the bank will cut interest rates to a new record low of 0.75 percent in February or March.

Economists had expected euro zone inflation to remain at 2.8 percent in December.

IRAN EFFECT

Stripping out volatile energy prices, the main driver behind a 3 percent peak in the headline number in September, October and November, inflation was 1.9 percent.

Without energy and food, it was 1.6 percent.

That sits better with the ECB's target of below, but close to 2 percent, which the Frankfurt-based bank judges to be right for price stability and a healthy economy.

The euro zone's economy, however, is anything but. The bloc's gross domestic product probably contracted in the fourth quarter of 2011 and is expected to do so again in the first quarter of 2012 - showing it has fallen into a recession.

The weakening economy and rising unemployment across the bloc are cutting demand for goods and with it pressuring retailers to reduce prices. That has offset continuing high prices for crude oil globally due to concerns about a supply disruption in Iran.

Oil futures rose on Monday after Saudi Arabia told its Gulf Arab neighbors not to make up any shortfall caused by an embargo on Iranian crude oil exports.

In the euro zone in December, fuels for transport, heating oil, gas and electricity had the biggest impact on inflation in December. Energy inflation was a massive 9.7 percent in the month, compared to December 2010, Eurostat said.

What Guatemala's new president wants from the US

Former Gen. Otto Perez Molina, who will be inaugurated as Guatemala's president today, plans to push for renewed US military aid, raising concerns among critics of his legacy from Guatemala's civil war.

? A daily summary of global reports on security issues.

?Former Guatemalan Gen. Otto Perez Molina will be inaugurated today as the first military official to lead the country since its return to democracy 26 years ago.

Topping Mr. Perez?s list of priorities as he takes office is overturning a longstanding ban on US military aid to Guatemala, which he aims to use to contain and deter drug-related violence in the country. Guatemala has?one of the highest murder rates?in the Western hemisphere and is increasingly plagued by high crime and violence linked to drug trafficking in Mexico, reports the Guardian. Many citizens voted for Mr. Perez based on his ?iron fist? campaign that?promised to crack down on crime.

Yet? his hopes of overturning the ban worry observers who are critical of his involvement in Guatemala?s bloody 36-year civil war. Perez garnered international attention during his run for office due to accusations of his involvement in massacres, kidnappings, and other human rights abuses during the civil war, which has strong ties to US military training and funding.

During Guatemala's long civil war, violence primarily targeted rural areas where family members were killed, children kidnapped, and crops destroyed. Further military training my not be the appropriate answer for a country still struggling with impunity and justice reforms, writes Tim Padgett in an op-ed for Time magazine.

?[T]he fear is that P?rez, despite all his talk of a?mano dura, or ?iron fist,? isn?t the man to bring rule of law to Guatemala, which is one of the world?s most lawless countries today. Guatemala, along with El Salvador and Honduras, is part of Central America?s northern triangle ? which U.S. military leaders call??the deadliest zone in the world??outside Iraq and Afghanistan. Guatemala?s murder rate is more than eight times the U.S.?s, largely because violent drug and extortion gangs have overrun the country.

?

?But equally troubling is the notion among Guatemala?s political and business elite that the military is the answer. Armies don?t fight crime, professional police do ? and like Mexico, which has also had to employ its military against drug cartels because it can?t rely on its cops, Guatemala is paying for centuries of unpardonable neglect of public security.??

The US Congress ended military aid to Guatemala in 1990 after the death of a US citizen at the hands of the Guatemalan Army and years of ongoing concern over military-led human rights abuses. The US played an active role in the conflict, first backing a military coup in 1954 to overthrow the democratically elected president, Jacobo Arbenz, who was viewed as a communist threat.? Fear of the Central American country falling to communism continued as left-wing guerrilla groups began fighting for land reform, battling military forces. Guatemala?s?indigenous populations bore the brunt?of the nearly four decades of violence, largely because they lived in rural communities where leftist groups were believed to seek refuge.

Gene Hackman injured while riding bicycle, OK (AP)

MIAMI ? Gene Hackman's publicist says the veteran Oscar-winning actor was briefly hospitalized after a truck bumped him from behind while he was riding a bicycle in the Florida Keys.

Susan Madore says the 81-year-old Hackman was airlifted to a Miami hospital Friday afternoon.

She characterized his injuries as minor bumps and bruises. She says he was released from the hospital several hours later after routine tests.

The Florida Highway Patrol reports that Hackman was riding on an Islamorada street around 3 p.m. when the pickup hit the back of his bicycle, throwing him onto the grassy shoulder. No charges were immediately reported.

Hackman won an Academy Award for "The French Connection" in 1971 and another for "Unforgiven" in 1992. He received Oscar nominations for three other films.

Santorum's past comments give Democrats fodder (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Rick Santorum is brash and blunt, and proudly so. But it's a trait that will make it easy for Democrats to use his own words against him if he were to become the Republican presidential nominee.

Far from apologetic, Santorum takes an "I-am-who-I-am" attitude. Lately, though, as he tries to emerge as the conservative alternative to front-runner Mitt Romney, the former Pennsylvania senator has been asking Republican voters to look beyond his verbal missteps.

"I'm a consistent conservative," Santorum often says these days. "I'm not a perfect conservative."

While his latest verbal miscue came as he campaigned in Iowa, his career is paved with them.

National civil rights groups recently thumped Santorum after video surfaced of him discussing Medicaid and food stamps. He appears to say: "I don't want to make black people's lives better by giving them somebody else's money. I want to give them the opportunity to go out and earn the money."

He tried to take it back a few days later, telling CNN in an interview: "I'm pretty confident I didn't say `black' ... I started to say a word and sort of mumbled it and changed my thought."

Santorum's comments on sex and faith as well as race have led to controversy during his 16 years in the House and Senate and when he was an author, radio talk-show host, think-tank fellow and Fox News commentator.

Santorum once compared homosexuality to bigamy, incest and adultery, provoking a firestorm of protest from gay rights supporters. He also blamed Boston's liberal political culture for the clergy sex abuse scandal that shook its Catholic diocese, drawing a thunderous rebuke from Sen. Edward M. Kennedy on the Senate floor.

All that, and more, is sure to be resurrected if the GOP chooses Santorum to challenge President Barack Obama in the fall.

Santorum nearly defeated Romney in Iowa's caucuses but fared poorly in New Hampshire's primary. He's now barnstorming on friendlier turf in South Carolina, hoping for a come-from-behind victory in its Jan. 21 primary through his outreach to the GOP's statewide evangelical base.

A devout Catholic and a leading voice against gay rights and abortion, Santorum rose to prominence as an unabashed warrior in America's culture wars during his 12 years in the Senate. He lost a bid for re-election in 2006 by a 17-point margin.

Perhaps his most talked-about comment is one that came in a 2003 interview with The Associated Press.

Santorum angered gay rights advocates by saying states should have the right to ban gay sex and by comparing homosexuality to bigamy, incest and adultery. He cited a pending Supreme Court case over a Texas sodomy law and said: "If the Supreme Court says that you have the right to consensual sex within your home, then you have the right to bigamy, you have the right to polygamy, you have the right to incest, you have the right to adultery."

He went on to say: "In every society, the definition of marriage has not ever to my knowledge included homosexuality. That's not to pick on homosexuality. It's not, you know, man on child, man on dog, or whatever the case may be."

Asked about those remarks by CNN recently, Santorum said he did not mean to draw a parallel between homosexuality and the other sexual behaviors he mentioned. "I didn't connect them. I specifically excluded them," he said.

Santorum previously has said his remarks to the AP were in the context of a past Supreme Court ruling on privacy and were not meant as "a statement on individual lifestyles."

It was another issue entirely that earned Santorum the wrath of many Democrats in Massachusetts.

In a July 2002 column for Catholic Online, Santorum wrote that promoting "alternative lifestyles" feeds aberrant behavior, such as priests molesting children.

"Priests, like all of us, are affected by culture," he wrote. "When the culture is sick, every element in it becomes infected. While it is no excuse for this scandal, it is no surprise that Boston, a seat of academic, political and cultural liberalism in America, lies at the center of the storm."

Massachusetts Democrats were outraged. Romney, then the state's governor, called the remarks unfortunate.

A few years later, Democrats went after Santorum during his 2006 re-election bid for statements in his book "It Takes a Family: Conservatism and the Common Book" that they claimed were insensitive to the struggles of two-income families.

(AP) ? A 76-year-old great-grandfather who gives eye-glazing speeches on monetary policy, displays a crotchety streak and disappears from the Republican campaign trail for days at a time to rest is captivating young voters.

Texas Rep. Ron Paul's libertarian message of less government, personal liberty and ending U.S. military involvement overseas clicks with young people, who are supplying zest for his stronger-than-expected presidential campaign. Nearly half of all voters under 30 went for Paul in the first two states to vote, helping to propel him to a second-place finish in the New Hampshire primary and third place in Iowa's leadoff caucuses.

Why would young people gravitate to the oldest guy in the field?

"Freedom is a young idea," says Eddie Clearwater, a 22-year-old Des Moines photographer who attended a Ron Paul party in Ankeny, Iowa, earlier this month. "All of his policies are such a good, radical change. It's what we need."

Paul's campaign events are charged with an energy that any politician would love, attracting an eclectic band of youthful activists ranging from preppy college students to blue collar workers to artists sporting piercings and dreadlocks. At his party after the New Hampshire primary, there were spontaneous chants of "Ron Paul Revolution! Give us back our Constitution" and "President Paul! President Paul!"

A tickled Paul told the cheering crowd: "Freedom is a wonderful idea, and that's why I get so excited. But I really get excited when I see young people saying it."

"We are dangerous to the status quo of this country," said Paul, who seems to relish making political mischief and has taken on the role of a feisty attacker in some of the GOP debates.

While Paul is unlikely to win the GOP nomination and young voters make up a relatively small slice of the electorate ? 12 percent in the New Hampshire primary and 15 percent in the Iowa caucuses ? their lopsided support has made Paul a force to be reckoned with in the 2012 campaign. And it could prompt a more serious consideration of his views by Republicans and Democrats alike.

"Ron Paul is bringing unorthodox ideas to the marketplace that don't fit with the conventional pillars of either political party," said Matthew Segal of OurTime.org, a nonpartisan group that promotes political participation among young people. "And because young people today are a uniquely independent-minded generation, he's resonating with them."

According to polling-place interviews conducted for The Associated Press and the television networks, 53 percent of under-30 voters in New Hampshire and 35 percent in Iowa identified as independents or something else. They are not establishment Republicans, and not as supportive of the tea party movement as their elders.

Paul's critics sometimes poke fun at his popularity with that age group, suggesting they are mainly attracted to his anti-war message and support for liberalizing drug laws, which are both far outside the Republican mainstream.

But the stereotypes belie the reality facing young people.

Polling-place interviews in New Hampshire and Iowa found younger voters in both states were just as likely as older voters to cite the economy as their top concern. Paul won among younger voters who said the economy is the most important issue. Overall, he drew 46 percent of under-30 voters in New Hampshire, beating front-runner Mitt Romney by a full 20 percentage points in that age group. In Iowa, he got 48 percent of the youth vote, 12 points higher than top-two-finishers Romney and Rick Santorum combined.

In interviews, Paul's young supporters say they fear a bleak future of joblessness, steep college loan payments, pandering politicians and a government made sluggish by debt. Paul's pledge to adhere to the Constitution and shrink government appeals to many young voters looking to get back to basics, as does his promise to focus on problems at home.

"We're in such a crisis right now we should focus on us, not choose which country we aid and which country we invade next," said Nick Wright, a 23-year old volunteer at a Paul campaign event in Meredith, N.H.

Jeff Popek, of Meredith, said he believes Paul's plan to slash taxes would spur job creation.

"A lot of us are graduating with a lot of college debt and we can't pay for it unless we get jobs," the 18-year old said.

Many of Paul's younger supporters say they believe the government is overly intrusive and encroaching on civil liberties. They like his pledge to overturn the Patriot Act, which Congress passed in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks to allow law enforcement greater access to people's email, telephone and other records.

The heavily wired generation of younger voters also responds to Paul's warning that the federal government is poised to limit Internet privacy. He often rails against a bill pending in Congress called SOPA, the Stop Online Privacy Act, that Paul insists would allow the government to snoop on people's Internet searches.

"They want to take over the Internet," Paul said to boos at a campaign stop in Iowa. "Can you imagine how much we're going to be curtailed in the spreading of our information if we lose the Internet?

Paul does part ways with younger voters on some issues. He opposes abortion rights, even as polls show that a majority of young people support a woman's right to have an abortion. He says the subject of gay marriage should be left to the states. Polls show young people strongly support same sex marriage, much more so than older voters.

While he might not share their views on these issues, his libertarianism means he's not trying to outlaw them.

After the presidential race shifted to South Carolina this week, Paul decamped to Texas for a few days of rest. His young supporters say age matters little to them. His message, they say, is what matters.

President Barack Obama "should be the poster child for why you shouldn't vote for someone for their age or because they look presidential," said Anthony Mazaka, a 27-year-old architect who voted for Paul in New Hampshire. "People have to realize Obama isn't the president he said he was going to be."

Obama won 66 percent of young voters in 2008 and is working hard to reclaim them. But Obama's popularity has dipped with young voters, as it has with many other groups amid a weak economy and persistent high unemployment.

Paul's young supporters may choose not to back either Obama or the Republican primary victor. And Paul hasn't ruled out a third party candidacy, which could keep many young voters in his camp.

"Any political operative in either party would be stupid to ignore Ron Paul's appeal," Segal said.

Guatemala congressman killed as inauguration nears (Reuters)

GUATEMALA CITY (Reuters) ? A Guatemalan congressman was shot dead in his car within blocks of the legislative assembly on Friday, one day before a new president and new body of lawmakers take power.

Valentin Leal, who defected on Wednesday to the party of incoming President Otto Perez, was killed when two assassins on a motorcycle pulled alongside his grey SUV and pelted the vehicle with at least 17 bullets, police said.

Perez, who will be sworn in on Saturday, has vowed to boost the number of police and send the military to fight the Mexican drug cartels who use the country's porous border region as a smuggling route for cocaine.

Political violence is common in Guatemala and 43 people were killed in the 2011 elections, including municipal and congressional candidates, according to the Attorney General's office for human rights.

Perez's conservative Patriot Party (PP) won 58 seats in last September's elections to form the largest block in the 158-member unicameral congress, but lacks the two-thirds majority needed to ensure policies pass swiftly.

He has been talking with lawmakers from rival parties to lure them to the PP's ranks.

Leal, an attorney, had served as a congressman for the Renewed Democratic Liberty party in the last administration.

He was to represent the northern province of Alta Verapaz, where in December 2010 the government declared a 60-day 'state of siege' that suspended constitutional rights as state forces raided homes and businesses in search of powerful organized crime bosses.

Golf Channel Records Highest Rating In Years With PGA Tour Opener

If anyone thinks that the PGA Tour's TV ratings would suffer in its first tournament of 2012 without its marquee player and a rising tide of Tebow mania, think again:

Multichannel News:

Golf Channel, coming off the most-watched year in its 17-year history, teed off the 2012 PGA Tour season by recording the highest-rated and most-watched opening round of the Hyundai Tournament of Champions since the network began covering the event in 2007.

Golf Channel's first-round coverage on Friday from Hawaii garnered a 0.7 household rating and 705,000 average viewers, according to Nielsen data. That was up 27% over last year's previous best and more than 50% better than any previous opening round of this event on Golf Channel.

Surely NBC and Golf Channel executives are thrilled that they did so well in what seemed like a tough battle for viewers eyes this weekend. Without a doubt, the top sport in America is football, and its top league is of course the NFL, which began its playoffs this weekend. That following the annual orgy of college football bowl games leading up to the championship game last night. At the same time, college basketball, another sport of great interest, served up the start of the meat of its annual all-you-can-eat schedule when it started conference play. And, of course, both sports received plenty of hype beforehand with an endless parade of talking heads taking a look from every angle. But instead of choosing yammering pundits, plenty of people chose live competition in a sport that seemingly has no offseason.

In short, despite whatever happened over the weekend, it would seem at first that eyes would be in short supply, but GC and the Tour came out of it all smiles.

I?m Not Here To Make Friends

Just to be sure, I spent an hour this morning going over my Google search history, which includes more than 52,000 queries that I?ve performed over the years. I re-ran some of my old queries in two ways?first with Google?s new social-heavy service turned on, and then with it off. (Yes, thankfully, there?s a button to deactivate the new feature, which is turned on by default.) Among other things, I searched for Emo Philips, ?hot mess,? Pakistani biryani, Mark Duplass, Dualit classic white toaster, Harold Camping, flourless chocolate cake, pardon pepper, child proofing, Jerry Brown taxes, Kia Soul, and Hawaii big island hotel. Several of these queries returned links that were shared by my friends, but not once did Google return a fantastic link on the social page that it didn?t also return on the non-social page. In most cases, the results were identical; in the few instances in which the social page returned additional links, those links weren?t what I was looking for.

A closer look at Origin PC's Phase Change cooling system (and its new gaming laptops too)

Believe it or not, we just spent 45 minutes with two of Origin PC's founders and weren't treated to a gaming demo. Then again, the company isn't here at CES to brag about 3DMark11 scores. Instead, it's showing off its new freon-based Phase Change cooling technology, which enables the Genesis desktop to be overclocked to 5.7GHz, and which pushes that desktop's starting price from $1,337 to $4,499. So how does that $3,000 feature work? In brief, it uses a compressor to send chilled vapor through insulated tubing, eventually hitting a cold plate running as low as -40 degrees Celsius. The Little Devil chassis used for the purpose of this demo has an LED screen displaying the operating temperature, but you won't need it: the system automatically shuts down if it gets too cold, and it won't boot into Windows until Phase Change is up and running. In addition to all this, the Genesis uses liquid cooling around the motherboard, and an air-based system on the video cards.

While we were there, we also checked out the EON15-S and EON17-S laptops, which will be available with an updated design sometime this quarter. Though the interior should look familiar to anyone who's ever laid eyes on a Clevo, Origin remodeled the lid, adding a matte finish option and race car-inspired molding (to evoke the idea of speed, natch). As for specs, Origin's founders directed us to the company's website, which suggests the internals won't change along with the design (certainly, the prices remain the same). Expect these to start at $1,539 for the 15-incher and $1,590 for the larger model -- prices that now include 24/7 free lifetime support. Find some photos below and continue on past the break for a video where you can see (and hear) that Phase Change setup in action.

Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders perform for troops in Asia

U.S. troops in Asia got an early dose of cheer this holiday season.

For the 73rd time, the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders embarked on a USO tour to perform for soldiers stationed overseas. A group of 12 cheerleaders made stops to U.S. bases in Japan and South Korea, visiting 21 installations and putting on six shows from Dec. 13-22, according to the USO's website.

"We all want to spend time with our family and loved ones for the holidays," cheerleader Ally Taylor told USO.org. "But for many of our men and women in uniform that's not possible. That's why we wanted to make sure we touched as many military families as possible."

Ali MacLean: I'm With Alec: American Has Baggage

Okay, I was never good at math, but 60 pounds equals 60 pounds. Right? If you have 60 pounds in one bag, and then take 15 pounds out and put it in another bag and both of those bags are going on a plane you are still taking 60 pounds of your precious belongings onto a plane... right?

Please don't tune me out because I sound like some SAT question you may have skipped on the test. Okay, I skipped on the test. I'm just checking my facts here because I'm just a traveling layman, not a aerospace scientist, or a conglomerate corporation whose primary focus it is to calculate numbers such as these: 60=60. Which is maybe why this corporation has filed for bankruptcy.

Welcome to American Airlines.

As I scrambled at the American counter to remove a sweater, two books, three magazines, a package of Starbucks coffee, my toiletries (but not the hair pomade) and my make up bag, my jewelry, and a pair of shoes and fit them in my purse and carry on, the questioned dawned on me... all the items are all going on the plane. What freaking difference does it make?

Yes, my bag is heavy. I've been away for over a month plus I've accumulated several books, and there's Christmas... but it's all going on the plane. 60 pounds is 60 pounds.

Well, not according to American Airlines. 60 pounds checked is an extra 100 dollars bag fee. So actually 60 equals 100! Me carrying odd packages slung over my shoulder like a Sherpa, a stack of books like a college grad at finals, clothing tied around my waist like a hipster bag lady -- through the terminal, in and out of the bins at security and on and off the plane? Only 25 dollars. So 45 equals 25. And sore shoulders. Are you still with me?

When I boarded everyone was told no coats in the overhead bin. No shopping bags in the overhead bin. Only wheelies in the overhead bin. So, basically, only heavy suitcases in the overhead bin? 60 pounds is 60 pounds. I stuffed everything around me and below me like an economy class scarecrow, unable to move, unable to tweet about it because American didn't even have Wi-Fi on the flight. I'm lucky I got a light over my seat. I wasn't so lucky when I asked for some sugar for my tea.

The surly, bitchy, caustic flightie rolled her eyes at me and tossed a pack of sugar my way. Just like something I would have done to her, except I don't get paid to be pleasant and helpful because I know better than to work in a job where I would be nasty to people strapped into confined spaces who need me (you're welcome, humans). She was so testy, I was tempted to turn on my phone and play a rousing game of Words With Friends. Alec, are you free?

I have to admit I am spoiled. I'd just traveled overseas via Virgin, with the choice of over 40 movies at my fingertips, seats that recline like a lounger and free bags checked. Yes I said free. That Branson is a goddamned Communist or something!

Plus the food. Oh my good the food. All served with a smile. A pre-drink snack. Free wine. Then a post-drink snack. Then dinner (mine consisted of Christmas dinner with all the trimmings). Then another round of wine, mulled wine, spiked cider or tea. Then they came around with ice cream. Then they brought around tea and chocolate mousse. And then came teatime with cakes, scones and clotted cream, chocolates and mince pies. And then we had tea. That's 60 extra pounds right there.

Plus they give you little goodie bags with toothbrushes and socks and a sleep mask and a pen. They give it to you. No questions asked about shoplifting. They don't bill you for it later. Wow. Virgin really knows how to treat a gal on a date. Their name is deceiving because by the end of the trip I was willing to go as far as they wanted.

And it was all included with your economy ticketed flight. None of this swipe your credit card to pay seven dollars for a stack of Pringles bullshit. Plus they didn't ask us to pay eight dollars for our very own pillow and blanket that we can "take with us" either. Please. Who are you trying to kid? Unless we are deplaning and marching directly to our closest Occupy campsite, your thin blankets and flimsy pillows with dental cape covers are not needed for purchase, thanks.

Oh! And two dollars for head phones? To see Real Steel?

Screw you, American. You should be paying us as a focus group to sit through that.

Houston Students Trapped at School by Flooding (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | Houston, Texas is suffering severe storms and flooding. The National Weather Service report from 3 p.m. today lists severe flood and flash-flood warnings. Tornadoes have touched down and destroyed property according to the Houston Chronicle. CNN reports thousands are without power. I contacted a friend in Houston to get a view from the affected area.

"The rain started last night," says Lori Carr, a teacher from Houston, Texas. "It came on like a switch. It seemed to abate for a while then started up again. I got to school without any trouble this morning. Around 8:30 the skies darkened and it became almost pitch black. We have these temporary buildings on campus and we started getting messages that we'd have to evacuate them. The rain was coming down in buckets and we had to move all those kids into the main school gym. It was raining tons and was very dark."

"After my second class a colleague who shares my office and lives within about a quarter mile of the school tried to go home," she continued, describing the flooding. "He came back 15 minutes later looking like he'd been thrown in a swimming pool. Our parking lot, the streets surrounding the school and all of the feeder streets are flooded. He took me to some good vantage points and we took pictures [which she gave the author including publishing rights.]

"He walked home, wading through water over his knees. Kids are begging their parents to come get them but nobody can reach their kids here. It's terrible."

I asked about prospects for rescue.

"We haven't lost power," Lori said. "We're just stuck here and the city as at a standstill. Houston is such a commuter city and we don't have great public transportation. Houston is so spread out and the rain basically cut the legs out from under the city."

The urban sprawl and lack of modern transit appears to leave the city in jeopardy from extreme weather. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina the region needs much better disaster recovery plans. Kids are trapped and the city is unprepared to reach them. Houston needs better contingency plans in place for the future.

Earlier than expected, Daley out as chief of staff

(AP) ? In a jolt to the White House, President Barack Obama announced Monday that chief of staff William Daley was quitting and heading home, capping a short and rocky tenure that had been expected to last until Election Day. Obama budget chief Jack Lew, a figure long familiar with Washington's ways, will take over one of the most consuming jobs in America.

Daley's run as Obama's chief manager and gatekeeper lasted only a year. It was filled with consequential moments for the White House, like the killing of al-Qaida terrorist leader Osama bin Laden, but also stumbles with Congress and grumbles that Daley was not the right choice to coordinate an intense operation of ideas, offices and egos.

Obama said he reluctantly accepted the news and at first refused to accept Daley's post-holidays resignation letter last week.

Daley did not waver, expressing to his boss a desire to get back to his family in Chicago, where Daleys have dominated city politics for decades. But he offered no explanation on Monday about what accelerated his decision; he had committed to Obama that he would stay on through the election.

It apparently became clear that the fit was no longer working for either side. Senior adviser Pete Rouse had already taken on more of the day-to-day management.

Stepping in is the mild-mannered Lew, who began his career on Capitol Hill, where he spent nearly a decade as principal domestic policy adviser to the late House Speaker Tip O'Neill. Lew, 56, has worked for Obama as a deputy secretary of state before becoming budget director, the same position he held in the Clinton administration.

Daley had been brought in for his political savvy, business ties and experience as a commerce secretary. Yet as an outsider, he did not personally know Obama well, meaning he was forced to figure out the president and run his operation simultaneously. He did not seem to mesh as the one, more than anyone, charged with ensuring a smooth operation.

The president delivered the other side of the story, describing Daley as highly influential and effective.

White House officials said that to the degree Daley gets blame for any missteps, he also deserves credit for his work during a remarkably demanding year that ended on a high for Obama, with a political victory over House Republicans in getting a payroll tax cut extended.

"No one in my administration has had to make more important decisions more quickly than Bill. And that's why I think this decision was difficult for me," Obama said in a State Dining Room that was nearly empty except for the assembled media.

The mood was decidedly more low-key than other transitions involving the top staff job at the White House.

Obama now plows ahead in an election year with his third chief of staff ? one of the most crucial positions in government and politics. Daley had replaced the colorful and involved-in-everything Rahm Emanuel, who left the job to run for Chicago mayor, a position he now holds. Rouse also served as interim chief of staff for a stretch.

Those following Washington politics had seen this day coming, especially since Rouse took on more of Daley's traditional role in November. Although Obama praised Daley at length for his help on major decisions in 2011, the West Wing had endured private struggles with coordination and communication, particularly with Congress.

Daley, 63, was not pushed out the door, said a Democratic strategist familiar with the decision The timing was driven by Daley's personal reflection, yet it also only would have gotten more awkward for the White House had he not left before Obama's tone-setting State of the Union, said the strategist, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the personnel matter.

The State of the Union speech is Jan. 24, followed closely by the release of his White House budget proposal in early February. The chief-of-staff transition is expected by the end of the month, with Lew staying on at the Office of Management and Budget until the budget plan is released. It is unclear who will lead the agency after that.

Lew and Daley stood with the president on Wednesday but did not speak. The White House said neither man was giving interviews.

Lew's private sector experience includes a stint as managing director and chief operating officer of Citigroup's global wealth management division.

Daley, meanwhile, will serve as a co-chair of Obama's Chicago-based re-election efforts, said a campaign official, who requested anonymity ahead of the official announcement.

Unlike Daley, Lew comes with deep connections to Congress, where Obama's relationship with lawmakers is a source of constant debate.

Coming after Emanuel, a former congressman and a leader of his caucus, Daley's relationship with congressional Democrats was hardly smooth.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., who after being accustomed to speaking with Emanuel up to a dozen times a day, was in contact with Daley only rarely, according to a former senior Senate Democratic leadership aide who talked on condition of anonymity to speak about private relationships.

Reid sent out an upbeat statement on Lew ("a consummate professional with intimate knowledge of Congress) and Daley (for "handling crises few chiefs of staff have had to face.")

Daley also was blamed by congressional Democrats for an embarrassing incident last fall when Obama was forced to reschedule his plans to deliver a jobs speech to Congress after House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, rejected the date Obama first proposed.

Matters hit a new low when Daley complained in an interview with Politico in October that both congressional Republicans and Democrats were making life difficult for the president. Reid objected strongly to Daley's mention of problems with Democrats, considering his efforts to advance Obama's agenda, the aide said.

Ford to continue car making in Australia

AAP

The Ford Falcon will continue to be produced in Victoria until at least 2016 after a $103 million investment from the car company and the Victorian and federal governments.

The funding will be used to boost the fuel efficiency and emissions performance in the Ford Falcon and Ford Territory, both produced in Australia.

Acting Victorian Premier Peter Ryan says the announcement secures the immediate future of the Falcon and the 3500 jobs at Ford's Geelong and Broadmeadows plants.

Advertisement: Story continues below

"This secures the jobs that are here, but there was a concern about particularly 300 jobs that were perhaps at risk because of design-related issues, now those jobs are secured," Mr Ryan told reporters at Ford's Geelong plant on Tuesday.

The $103 million will be used to make the Falcon and Territory more fuel efficient by reducing C02 emissions.

The upgraded models will be released in 2014 and will ensure the vehicles will continue to be produced at the Geelong and Broadmeadows plants until at least the end of 2016.

Most of the body parts are produced at the Geelong stamping plant with the vehicles assembled in Broadmeadows.

The federal government will provide $34 million but Mr Ryan did not specify the Victorian government's contribution.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard said the announcement was great news for the future of the automotive industry in Australia.

Federal Manufacturing Minister Kim Carr, who also made the announcement at the Detroit Motor Show in the US, said the government was working with the company to ensure its future in Australia.

"This announcement is an important step in our ongoing commitment to strengthen the sector," Senator Carr said in a statement.

Ford Australia president Bob Graziano said Australia was one of only 13 countries in the world with the capabilities to design, develop and produce vehicles from the ground up.

"There's no doubt the large car segment is challenging, but it can remain viable if we continue to provide buyers with what they want - fuel efficiency, design excellence and features that enhance safety and the driving experience," he said.

The Australian Manufacturing Workers' Union said the $103 million investment to refresh Ford's current model line-up was a major boost to the company's fortunes and a long-awaited sign that the bad times may be over.
